Majuli
Majuli
Majuli is a unique river island, one of the largest in the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majuli). Its place in the culture and history of Assam is also unique as it has played and continues to play a major role courtesy its famous 'satras' (similar to monestaries), crafts (paper mache), handloom of the local Missing tribes, and more. Various groups of people and organizations, including the  GOA (Govt of Assam) and the GOI (Govt of India) are trying to have the UNESCO declare Majuli as a WHS (World Heritage Site). The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) hired a professional architectural firm to develop a report (or dossier in GOI terms) to be submitted to the UNESCO to reconsider Majuli as a WHS.

A WHS site declaration is a big honor and we all know that Majuli deserves it -now the question is – how to prove it that? Fortunately, the architect in-charge, Mr. Gullapalli SVSN.Murthy, has been working very diligently to gather fact-based as well as emotion-based documents for his report to the ASI. Mr. Murthy seems to be very sincere, open, knowledgeable, and committed to the project. Besides gathering relevant documentation to various aspects of Majuli to prepare his dossier, Mr. Murthy's work also includes examining how to preserve the island from severe soil erosion it faces every year. So, it is a multi-faceted report and it was important to help Mr. Murthy with his work and making it as easy as possible for him to access these important documents, meeting the relevant officials (including the legislative leaders from Majuli), among others.

The current ASAF President, Sanjib Bhuyan, has been working with various individuls from Assam (e.g., 'Friends of Majuli'), USA, and elsewhere outside Assam to provide the assistance and support Mr. Murthy needs to secure cooperation and documentation to complete his project successfully. For example, Sanjib is working with the group, 'Friends of Majuli,' to sponsor a workshop and media-event to raise awareness of the importance of Majuli to Assam and the Northeast. Please stay tuned.
