Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (http://cacharcancerhospital.org/) is a fifty-bedded centre located at Meherpur in the town of Silchar, Assam. It serves the population of the Barak river valley that includes the districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi, the adjacent district of North Cachar Hills and the neighboring states of Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. The Hospital serves about 4500 new patients annually. A large percentage of the patients that come to the Hospital seeking care are from the lower economic strata owing to their nominal incomes. Most of them are daily agricultural laborers and tea garden workers. The Hospital consistently makes efforts to serve all its patients, irrespective of their economic status, with dedicated and high quality care. It provides cancer care at extremely low costs and, most often, for free to underprivileged patients.
The Hospital offers facilities for chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. It has facilities for endoscopies, ultrasound and computerized tomography (CT scan). In addition, a telecobalt unit, a surgical suite & a chemotherapy ward for day care and in patients are in operation. A multidisciplinary and multi specialty tumor board functions every day. Prevention and palliation are high priority activities at the Hospital. The Hospital was established in 1996 by the vision of a group of social workers drawn from different professions who formed the Cachar Cancer Hospital Society.
